My Secret to Awakening the Kundalini: meditation and self discipline by fasting
A Kundalini Awakening is the ultimate goal of yoga and a spiritual transformative process that begins with the releasing of a tremendous energy in a person's body. I was able to achieve a Kundalini Awakening, enlightenment or igniting the fire of divine love by practicing meditation, the eight limbs of yoga and fasting for many years.
I began by fasting twice a week on bread and water as a general practice in my early twenties. I would mentally join my fast to the consciousness of the Divine and the consciousness of the world so that I could pray and connect with the poor of the world. This joining of my consciousness caused me to become deeply meditative. Unintentionally I was raising my consciousness and ascending my soul.
I was practicing the eight limbs of yoga, which are yoga's ethical guidelines, as a lifestyle. I did not know that my lifestyle was adhering to the eight limbs of yoga and that it was a recipe for a Kundalini Awakening. The eight limbs are:
Yama - restraints, moral disciplines: Ahimsa - nonviolence
Satya - truthfulness
Asteya - non-stealing
Brahmacharya - chastity
Aparigraha - non-greed
Niyama - observances, self disciplines: Saucha - cleanliness
Santosha - contentment
Tapas - self-discipline
Svadhaya - self-study
Ishvara Pranidhana - surrender
Asana - comfortably seated position or physical postures
Pranayama - breath control
Pratyahara - withdrawal of the senses
Dharana - concentration
Dhyana - meditation
Samadhi - total absorption
February 2015, at the age of 48, I went on a pilgrimage to Israel. There I experienced a trauma which sent me into a state of deep meditation in which I felt myself become one with the Divine or a samadhi experience. I was traveling with a spiritual leader who had a great and powerful energy, in my distress he looked deeply into my eyes and I experienced Shaktipat which is the transmission of spiritual energy upon one person by another and initiated the Kundalini Awakening on February 11th. This occurred because my spirit was prepared to surrender to the Divine and did so as I looked into his eyes. A floating sensation and a feeling of deep peace and total trust in the Divine came over me. A few hours later an enormous energy erupted in my body and my body began to shake uncontrollably until I was able to meet again with my spiritual leader the next morning who was able to calm me by having me stare into his eyes.
The immediate effects of the Kundalini Awakening was the intense feeling of energy burning in my hands and feet and in my chakras to the point of extreme pain in my chest area as if it were being crushed. It felt as if the love of the universe had poured into me but was too much for my body to contain. Also months of a feeling that my ego was being crushed, unusual temptations and all kinds of supernatural phenomena including visions, locutions and frequent states of bliss alongside much confusion in my mind occured.
About a year and three months later I experienced my crown chakra fully opening. It felt as if a hole opened up in the top of my head and like fire was entering and exiting from the top of my head for about 24 hours. That is when the facial kriyas began and next the bodily kriyas which are involuntary spasms. By then I had obtained a wonderful psychologist, Tara Springett, who specializes in Kundalini Awakenings and she was able to help me regain control of my body and to begin to acclimatize to the tremendous energy in my body. I also received tremendous encouragement from Dr. R. Thornton, the psychiatrist who diagnosed me as a Kundalini Awakened Mystic.
Swimming provided great relief from the energy and then I turned to yoga for additional help and eventually became a yoga instructor. I studied Reiki as well so I include a Reiki hold on the shoulders of my yoga students if they would like during savasana so that they may benefit from the Kundalini energy. Many of my students come back to my classes especially for the Reiki hold. I specialize in facilitating meditative yoga classes.
